The Cornwall Rainfall Association, as I understand it, was formed at around the beginning of WW11 (in around 1941), with a number of rainfall observers gathering together to form this new organisation. All of these rainfall recording stations would use ‘standard’ rain gauges (Air Ministry/Meteorological Office registered), as well as all ‘standard’ exposures. When I began recording rainfall (firstly at College Farm, Penryn, Cornwall in 1971 – when I was 15 years old!), I had the pleasure of meeting both Mr. D.W. Bogle and Mr. C.A. Meek in the early years, as well as later, Mr. W. B. Champion, the then Head Gardener at Trelissick Gardens who took over from me (in around 1994) in collecting, collating and posting off all of the printed data from this most prestigious Organisation. (It was Mr. Meek who kindly passed on to me all of the C.R.A. data sheets that he had covering the years from 1958-1970 inclusive). After August 1999, when Mr. Champion resigned, it was then taken over by Mrs. Ros. Smith of Duchy College, Rosewarne who provided the data to all contributing observers up to, or around, the year 2000. Under her very worthy stewardship, as far as I am aware, the organisation was renamed the Cornwall Association of Rainfall Recorders (CARR). I do not know what happened after this final date (2000). I understand that some C.R.A. records are also held by the National Archives (dating from 1960-1996).
Unfortunately, there are inevitably a few breaks in these records (due to unavailability) for which I do apologise.
The records that I am producing are those held here. The data is presented in a series of 5 separate pages (10 Years in each page) excepting for the last page. This will ensure that any researchers will be able to work out ’10 year’ averages if so required.
Finally, at the foot of the page, there are 3 pages of Rainfall Averages for various years.
